I created these presets as part of my series called 'Basslines I Love and Why' for the tracks ‘Houdini’ by Dua Lipa and ‘Red Room’ by Hiatus Kaiyote.

Houdini

The bassline of 'Houdini' made me really happy when I first heard it, because I imagined that the sample was the bassline. Very unconventional for a pop hit…haha. So I started playing an approximation of the sample using lots of hammer-on's and pull-off's in combination with a nice fat chorus preset I made for the HX Stomp. This preset has some nice blocks that enhance the main sound of the bass and also work well with the chorus. I have played this preset live on many stages and I love how it cuts through the mix and is very wide at the same time.

Red Room

Hiatus Kaiyote is a Melbourne-based band with the most genre-fluid, jazzy music around. I was immediately captivated by the song "Red Room" when I first heard it. I love it when the bass steps out of its conventional role in a band, and Paul Bender delivers a masterclass in using chords and melodic lines to support and carry a song. I created a preset on the HX Stomp to capture the vibe of the bass tone. For me, the atmosphere it has on the record is not captured when it is played with a regular, clean tone. After trying some things, I ended up with a nice tape+amp sound that I really like! It's great for that kind of bass chord comping or just lo-fi sounds. I caught myself just playing with the sound and completely lost track of time. To me, that's always a good sign! I also added an additional reverb just for fun!
